POP+ Punk: Sleater-Kinney Songs To Rock As You Begin Carrie Brownstein's 'Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl'

MoPOP Book Club: Carrie Brownstein's 'Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl'

As part of POP+ Punk, the Museum of Pop Culture's month-long celebration of women in all things punk, our nonprofit museum's book club is getting involved with a related read.

In August, MoPOP Book Club charges on to a percussive, face melting, doc marten clomping beat with Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney's Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. In conjunction with our POP+ Punk exploration of female and female-identified punk artists, Brownstein's memoir will anchor lots of great programming including panel discussions, a showcase of our amazing collection of Riot Grrrl oral histories, punk-related artifacts and objects, as well as playlists to rock out to (see below!).

Before starring in the hit sketch comedy series Portlandia, Brownstein, a Seattle native, made up one part of Sleater-Kinney, a punk band Brownstein formed in 1994 alongside fellow Riot Grrrl rocker Corin Tucker. Between their '90s formation and 2006, Sleater-Kinney released seven studio albums and later reunited to release two more, one in 2015 and another in 2019.

As book clubbers begin to dive into Brownstein's Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl, give these Sleater-Kinney tracks embedded below a listen. The playlist should serve as a nice primer to the band's catalog, featuring a couple of songs from each of Sleater-Kinney's nine albums.

We hope you'll join us for virtual book club discussions on Monday, August 17 and Monday, August 31. Here's where you can find Brownstein's Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl:

Throughout the month of August, with POP+ Punk we’re exploring and celebrating the contributions of women in all things punk: the sound, the fashion, activism, and the culture. First Tech is a proud supporting sponsor of MoPOP's POP+ programming.
